Install the Temperature Sensor Module for Shelly 1 or Shelly 1 PM

This article will help you install the temperature (or humidity) module in a Shelly 1 or Shelly 1 PM. This article only shows with a Shelly module and not a NodeMCU or other.

The "Temperature Sensor" module is an addon of the Shelly module that allows you to add the ambient temperature of a room where the temperature probe is located, to get a feedback on the status of a magnetic contact or to obtain the humidity of the room in a Shelly model 1 or 1PM.

We will see together how to install a Shelly Temperature Sensor addon for the older Shelly 1 models, we will not address the waterproof side if you wish to put it outside.

Never forget to turn off the circuit breakers when working with electricity! Indeed, when acting in an electrical installation, it is always preferable to cut off the power supply before any intervention to avoid any possible danger. Never forget: a small oversight can happen to anyone.

The Shelly addon is sort of a small adapter that will clip onto the main module, it will make a kind of pairing. The small box will play a role of receiver: it can receive the temperature or the humidity rate of the room (main use).

The sensors of the Shelly 1 offer good accuracy in measuring temperature (measuring range from -40°C to +125°C) and relative humidity (from 0% to 100%). These data can be used to create scenarios and automations with the aim of optimizing your comfort and saving energy.

What can we achieve with this addon?

  • Sensor Improvement: We improve our sensors by having humidity and temperature at our fingertips.
  • Creating a connected thermostat: It can be used as a temperature reception to create a connected thermostat.
  • Compatibility: Jeedom / HomeAssistant / Domotics / Eedomus / Tahoma / KNX and other home automation boxes are compatible with this module.
  • Comfort of the connected home: You improve the comfort of your connected home.

In concrete terms

  • You place temperature sensors near the windows, when the sun is too strong, the roller shutters close automatically.
  • You place temperature sensors in each room, as soon as the temperature reaches more than 37 degrees, a fire alarm goes off.
  • You place this sensor in a hot water tank to recover its temperature: you create your own solar router with other modules.
  • Automate the heating regulation by room.
  • Put this sensor in the refrigerator to receive an alert if the temperature is too high.
  • Use these shellies as thermometers

Did you know? The Shelly consumption is always in "low power" mode even with an additional module. That's important for your wallet, isn't it?

Current functions of the module:
Add a temperature probe to probe the temperature of a room, a fridge, water, etc.
Add a humidity probe
Add a magnetic contact to know if the contact is open or not.
Temperature Sensor Module Shelly

This module is tiny and does not take up much more space than a Shelly module.

It is still possible to install the Shelly + the addon in a junction box.

Possible also behind switches but it will probably require a bit more luck.

You can add up to a maximum of 3 temperature probes or 1 humidity module or 1 magnetic contact for the same module. The probes cost about 3 euros each, for 9 euros, you therefore have 3 temperature probes for a module! It's always in the spirit of Shelly, cheap home automation, but effective!

The compatible probe type for temperature is the following model: DS18B20! It is a probe with 3 wires (black wire and red wire for power +/- and the yellow wire for DATA data).

This addon is really interesting, goodbye battery-operated temperature modules! Aren't you tired of having to change the batteries every 1 to 4 years depending on the temperature sensor? Thank you, Shelly!

To install the "Temperature Sensor" addon, here are the instructions:

Installation Instructions for the Temperature Sensor Shelly

1. take the Shelly 1 (or PM) module and remove the blue covers (from the Shelly1) behind the Shelly. It is not necessary to remove the "little blue cover".

2. click the addon into the Shelly (you cannot make a mistake, the module has the same shape as the Shelly), you just need to follow the shape. The shape must be consistent between the two modules.

3. connect the 3 cables using the wago (terminals) provided. The yellow cable is connected to the yellow cable, the red cable goes with the red and the black cable goes with the black.

4. when everything is well connected, the temperature is automatically displayed in the Shelly module. It is not necessary to activate the "Relay" in the options.

4bis. It's done!

Are the measurement ranges reliable with Shelly?

Yes, you will have very reliable measurement ranges.

The Shelly 1 with its addon is a versatile and efficient home automation module that allows you to improve your home automation installation by adding the measurement of temperature and humidity to your connected devices for only a dozen euros.

Shelly Temperature Sensor

To conclude the article, we saw that it was really easy to install this temperature module in a Shelly 1 or 1 PM and that if it did not work properly it was often because the cables were poorly connected together.
